This is my 31st year in education, all in Napa, CA, my birthplace.  I spent seven years as an elementary school prinicipal but returned to the classroom in order to raise my sons and be a family man.  I started teaching Read 180/System 44 in 2009/2010. I am now solely a R180/S44 teacher and I am loving every minute of it.  I love where Scholastic is taking the program.  They listen to those of us who use it every day and are eager to continue to improve what is already a dynamite reading success.

My next goal is to make our school a pre-school through adult R180/S44 school.  I hope Scholastic will work with me on developing an adult version of the program for our parents who struggle with reading.  I believe we can make our parents superhero readers right along side of their children.  Just think of where we will be able to go from there.

It has been a real honor and thrill to be named the S44 Outstanding Educator for 2011.  I never expected such an honor and honestly, that's not why I became a teacher.  I do want to thank all my supporters and those who have beleived in me.  Most importantly, I want to thank the R180/S44 team here at Phillips and the support providers from NVUSD and our Principal and vice-principal for all they have done to make me a better teacher.  Most important of all I want to thank my students who have worked so hard to succeed and make my job look so easy.  Their drive and desire to be successful has proven to be very contagious.

About My Classroom
I like to think of my classroom as a warm inviting room where students come to learn. There is a great deal of color and stuffed animal friends. I am firm with my students yet fair. We have fun but learning is our number one priority. My classroom seems to be the place for students to go after school, most of them eager to get on the computers and continue with S44.
Experience and Training
I have been in education for 31 years. 24 as a classroom teacher ranging in grades three through six. I spent seven years as a principal of two elementary schools located on one site but I truly believe I belong in the classroom where I can make more direct contact with the students. I am now trained in R180 Next Gen and am eager to see even better results! Really looking forward to iRead.
Why I Teach READ 180 and/or System 44
It is the best thing going! I love the structure and the format. It took some convincing at first, but now that I see the outstanding success the R180/S44 Program provides for our low readers I am sold 100%. I look forward to continued progress with R180/S44.
