This is my 31st year in education, all in Napa, CA, my birthplace. I spent seven years as an elementary school prinicipal but returned to the classroom in order to raise my sons and be a family man. I started teaching Read 180/System 44 in 2009/2010. I am now solely a R180/S44 teacher and I am loving every minute of it. I love where Scholastic is taking the program. They listen to those of us who use it every day and are eager to continue to improve what is already a dynamite reading success.
My next goal is to make our school a pre-school through adult R180/S44 school. I hope Scholastic will work with me on developing an adult version of the program for our parents who struggle with reading. I believe we can make our parents superhero readers right along side of their children. Just think of where we will be able to go from there.
It has been a real honor and thrill to be named the S44 Outstanding Educator for 2011. I never expected such an honor and honestly, that's not why I became a teacher. I do want to thank all my supporters and those who have beleived in me. Most importantly, I want to thank the R180/S44 team here at Phillips and the support providers from NVUSD and our Principal and vice-principal for all they have done to make me a better teacher. Most important of all I want to thank my students who have worked so hard to succeed and make my job look so easy. Their drive and desire to be successful has proven to be very contagious.
