Understanding by Design (UBD)

I answer questions for teachers about READ 180.  I've had a teacher ask me if anyone has put READ 180 into UBD (Understanding by Design) format.  Have any of you worked with UBD?  Have you done any READ 180 units in UBD format?  If you have worked with UBD but not put READ 180 into the UBD format, maybe you would have some ideas that would help this teacher.

  • Hi Dee, Not sure if you still need a response since I see this was posted quite a while ago. I am familiar with UBD and the method of planning is to envision the final product(s) you want to achieve and then plan backwards. Essentially, it's top-down planning: taking the big thing you want students to achieve and piecing together the smaller components that will help you and them reach the goal(s). UBD can be very in-depth and include language objectives as well as reading objectives. It might also break vocabulary into different tiers (I, II, III) to help you focus on the fewer, most important, words of a lesson or unit. I use the UBD method as we begin a new workshop or a new writing assignment. I think about what I want students to achieve during the workshop or produce as their final draft; then, I map out the individual things we need to do first. Hope this was still relevant, Miranda
