I need suggestions on what to include in the professional development training I'm trying to do to turn my school into a school of readers. Please help!!
What a great discussion question for us. Here are a few ideas: Matching Students with Text - If you use the SRI to determine Lexile levels of your students, this process can be a ittle easier than other systems. Whatever system you decide to use, then teaching teachers how to match students with text appropriate for their reading levels will help them. Vocabulary Building - Vocabulary is key to reading. Teachers need strategies for teaching vocabulary. Structured Engagement Routines - The structured engagement routines used in READ 180 will facilitate any classroom. Using the same routines across the curriculum, throughout a school, will help students know what to expect from teachers. Differentiating Instruction - We can all use work on how to differentiate instruction and build it into the teaching of reading. Reading Skills and Strategies - Reminding teachers of how to teach specific reading skills and strategies will improve instruction for students. I am sure I can add to this list, but this should help get the discussion started. Dee Ask Dee at the READ 180 Community
