Wondering if anyone has taken a break between Real Book/rBook units before to do book groups? If so, how did it go? What resources did you use?

I would like to take a break for a couple weeks between units to use the Read 180 classroom books in a book group unit. I was planning on using RDI lessons that could be applied to the book groups during Whole Group and focus on written response, quick writes, and academic discussion during small group. If anyone has experience doing something like this, I would love to hear how it went and what resources you used.

Debbie Lee gets good results for her students. Take a look at her blog post at http://educatorcommunity.hmhco.com/blog/stage-c/independent-reading-nows-the-best-time-to-read-a-class-novel. I don't recommend using the books from the library for this kind of activity, but you might find some people who have success with it. Dee, Ask Dee at the READ 180 Community

https://educatorcommunity.hmhco.com/blog/system-44/the-book-that-got-my-reluctant-readers-hooked I took a break and did an interactive book read with the entire class using Buddy by MH Herlong. We skipped whole group instruction for a month because the book and its activities were interactive. It worked well! Finally, all of my students were on the same page(so to speak) with Learning plot, characters, theme, conflict, resolution, etc. Read my blogs to find out more!

I did book clubs using Read180 stage B books: "Dive" "Rules" "I am Malala" and a Jackie Robinson book. Here is a link to all my files I made to do this book club. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2ssw0qo8jikun1b/AABLwU8RFh8j-NQ1HqzPBy-ea?dl=0 I chose to do it at the end of the year in place of whole group just like you are suggesting!
