About My Classroom
I had many lamps, couches and bean bag chairs in the reading center, as well as student book projects on the walls and hanging down from the ceiling. I found it important to have clearly identified centers for SSR, computers and small group instruction with structured routines in place.
Experience and Training
I taught regular ELA for 13 years in Houston, TX, R180 for 2+ years at Crestwood Middle in Kentwood Public Schools (MI), and then began overseeing the program for the district in Oct. 2007. We service approximately 450 students in R180 across 6 secondary buildings. We piloted System 44 in the spring '09 at Crestwood & expanded it to our other two middle schools & the high school in the fall '09.
Why I Teach READ 180 and/or System 44
I absolutely love these programs with their differentiation, high-interest readings, motivating video clips to help build background knowledge, and the software with its adaptive technology that works at each student's individual level. It's awesome to see our struggling readers excited to go to class!
