System 44 in a 48 minute period get the most effect out of the program.

I am teaching a 6-8 grade middle school System 44 in a 48 minute period. I currently am doing 15 minute rotations with a three way split. Software, independent reading and small group. I am looking for a better way to focus all the wholes the students have. We have a lot of decoding needs as well as comprehension needs. I am not sure if what I am doing is the recommended way. I know the program is designed for a 60 min period with 20 min rotations. Please if you have any advice please share. I have looked at the http://educatorcommunity.hmhco.com/resource/system-44-planning-template post already but is her rotations 15 mins? I just need some clarification please. Thank you, Jennifer

    Your arrangement is quite acceptable. I think quite a bit depends upon how many students you have. If you have 10-12 students or fewer, you could go to two rotations and have a whole group time where you address common needs. You could have one group working on the software for 20 minutes and another group with you for 20 minutes. The group you have with you could be split into a couple smaller groups depending upon their needs. One group could work on independent reading while you work with the others. It is amazing what can be accomplished in about 10 minutes with so few students. This would enable you to adjust that small group time according to individual needs.     Hi Dee, Do you mind if I jump into this conversation? I co-teach in a Read 180/System 44 classroom and run two 30 minutes groups for System 44 students. I was wondering about the set-up of my groupings as well. As the year progresses, I am finding that there is a continuum of student progress which require differentiation for small subsets within each 30 minute group. (each group is 4-5 students). I have two paraeducators available for support, and want to spend some time giving them the necessary training to become effective supports for my students.
